Inaugurated in September 2010 as the Arena Montpellier, the venue was designed to fill the gap for a massive indoor multifunctional space in Southern France. It quickly established itself as a sporting hub, famously hosting the 2011 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships and matches for the 2017 World Men’s Handball Championship. The arena also served as the long-time home for the Open Sud de France tennis tournament. Over the years, it has evolved into a mandatory stop for major French and international music tours, hosting legends such as Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna, and Muse.
The Sud de France Arena is celebrated for its immense modularity. Its interior can be configured in various ways to suit everything from intimate theater setups to full-scale arena concerts and indoor sports courts. The building’s exterior features a sleek, metallic design that stands out within the Parc des Expositions complex. Inside, the stands are designed to bring spectators as close to the performance area as possible, while the advanced acoustic treatment ensures high-quality sound even at maximum capacity. The venue is also fully ADA-compliant, featuring direct elevator access and dedicated areas for spectators with reduced mobility.
The atmosphere at the Sud de France Arena is versatile, shifting from the hushed intensity of a professional tennis match to the deafening roar of a 14,000-strong concert crowd. Because of its large floor space and high ceiling, the venue can support massive stage productions, pyrotechnics, and immersive light shows. The « Passionate South » energy is palpable here, with local fans known for their vocal support of regional teams and artists. The wide concourses and efficient security staffing ensure that the energy remains focused on the event rather than the logistics.
Strategically located in Pérols, the arena is adjacent to the Montpellier Mediterranean Airport and the Parc des Expositions. It is exceptionally well-connected to the Montpellier city center via the public transport network. For those driving, the venue is situated just off the A9 motorway (Exit 29 – Montpellier Est). The site offers approximately 5,500 free parking spaces, making it one of the most driver-friendly major arenas in France. Its location near the coast also makes it a popular destination for visitors staying in nearby seaside resorts like La Grande-Motte.
The venue was renamed « Sud de France Arena » in 2017 following a naming rights agreement with the Occitanie Region. The name promotes « Sud de France, » the umbrella brand for regional products and tourism. This 15-year partnership was spearheaded by Carole Delga, President of the Occitanie Region, to increase the international visibility of the local culture and economy through the arena’s high-profile events.
