The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi (Basketball Development Center) is Turkey’s newest and most ambitious sporting project, officially inaugurated in late 2024. Located on the site of the former Abdi İpekçi Arena in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, this 150,000-square-meter campus serves as the national headquarters for Turkish basketball. It features a main arena with a 10,000-seat capacity, a dedicated 1,000-seat arena for the Women’s and Infrastructure leagues, and three training halls. As of 2026, it is the primary home for the Turkish National Teams and hosts high-profile club matches, setting a new global standard for basketball-specific infrastructure.

Built to replace the legendary but aging Abdi İpekçi Arena, the Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi represents a complete reimagining of the site. Following the demolition of the old arena in 2018, the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization collaborated to create a « living campus. » Opened in September 2024, the facility held its first major event with the Presidential Cup. It was designed not just for professional games, but as a center of excellence to develop the next generation of Turkish basketball stars.
The center is a masterclass in modern sports architecture, blending industrial aesthetics with high-tech functionality. The main arena features a steep, bowl-style seating arrangement to keep the atmosphere intimate and intense. Beyond the court, the campus includes a basketball museum, a specialized library, a boutique hotel for athletes, and a sports science research center. The design emphasizes natural light in the common areas and high-performance acoustics in the competition halls, creating a professional environment that rivals top-tier NBA facilities.
Attending a game at the Gelişim Merkezi is a premium experience. The venue was built to provide a 360-degree entertainment show, utilizing advanced projection mapping on the court and a world-class sound system. For national team matches, the arena transforms into a sea of red and white, with the compact design ensuring that even the highest seats feel part of the action. The fan experience is modernized with high-speed Wi-Fi, digital fan engagement zones, and a seamless flow between the stands and the social areas.
The campus is situated in the Zeytinburnu district, an area historically known for its industrial roots that has recently undergone massive urban regeneration. The stadium is surrounded by the « Cultural Valley » project, which includes the historic Yedikule Fortress and the reconstructed city walls nearby. The neighborhood is a mix of traditional Istanbul residential life and modern parks. The campus itself acts as a massive green lung for the district, featuring landscaped walking paths and open-air courts that are often used by local youth, making the arena feel like a natural part of the urban fabric.
The name « Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi » literally translates to « Basketball Development Center. » It was chosen to reflect the facility’s multi-dimensional purpose. Unlike a standard arena that only hosts games, this « Center » is dedicated to the holistic growth of the sport—incorporating education, health, and history. It is often referred to by its acronym, BGM, and stands as a testament to Turkey’s vision of becoming a global powerhouse in basketball development.
The BGM is exceptionally well-connected to Istanbul’s transport network. The most efficient way to reach the arena is via the Marmaray commuter rail; exit at the « Kazlıçeşme » station, which is just a short 5-minute walk from the campus entrance. Additionally, the T1 Tram line and various bus routes serving the Zeytinburnu coast provide easy access. For those coming from the European side’s northern districts, the Metrobus (Cevizlibağ station) followed by a short taxi or shuttle is a reliable alternative.
The 10,000-seat main arena was designed with « perfect sightlines » in mind, meaning there are no pillars or obstructions. For the ultimate experience, the Courtside or « VIP » blocks offer a level of proximity to the players that is rare in European basketball. For general fans, the mid-tier sections of the side stands (Blocks 100-200) provide a fantastic tactical view of the entire court, while the seats behind the baskets are perfect for those who want to be in the middle of the most vocal supporter groups.
The BGM campus features its own curated food court with a variety of healthy and traditional Turkish options. For a more traditional experience, the surrounding Zeytinburnu area is famous for its « köfte » (meatball) restaurants and local tea gardens. A short distance away, the Kazlıçeşme waterfront offers several upscale dining options with views of the Marmara Sea. Inside the arena, you will find modern kiosks serving high-quality coffee and classic matchday snacks.
The center is a high-security facility with electronic entry systems. Tickets for National Team games or major club fixtures should be purchased via the official TBF or Biletix platforms. A unique feature of the BGM is its Basketball Museum—it is highly recommended to arrive 2 hours before tip-off to explore the history of the sport in Turkey. The venue is fully accessible for fans with disabilities, featuring elevators and dedicated viewing platforms in all halls.
