Pankritio Stadium (Greek: Παγκρήτιο Στάδιο), also known as the Pancretan Stadium, is a premier multi-purpose sports venue located in Heraklion on the island of Crete, Greece. Completed for the 2004 Summer Olympics, it stands as the third-largest stadium in Greece with a capacity of 26,240. Situated just 50 meters from the Cretan coastline, the stadium is a landmark of modern Greek sports infrastructure. As of 2026, Pankritio has entered a new chapter, serving as the primary home ground for OFI Crete following major renovation works in 2025 to upgrade its safety and UEFA standards.

Construction originally began in the late 1980s but faced decades of delays until Greece won the bid for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Resumed in 2001, the €50 million project was completed on December 31, 2003. It was inaugurated on March 31, 2004, with a friendly match between Greece and Switzerland. During the Olympics, it hosted 10 matches, including a men’s quarterfinal. After years of hosting Ergotelis and occasional national team games, the stadium underwent a significant €5 million renovation in 2025 to repair roof damage and modernize its lighting and VIP facilities, solidifying its place as a top-tier European venue in 2026.
Designed by Vassilis Floudas & Associates, the stadium is a concrete bowl featuring two tiers of seating. Its most distinctive characteristic is its seaside location, allowing spectators in the upper tiers to view the Aegean Sea. The venue is fully equipped with an 8-lane IAAF-standard athletics track, making it a « true » multi-purpose facility. The recent 2025 upgrades replaced the detached roof panels on the east and west sides with modern, wind-resistant materials and installed energy-efficient LED floodlighting, bringing the stadium into compliance with UEFA Category 4 requirements.
The matchday experience at Pankritio is defined by the unique blend of coastal breezes and the fierce passion of Cretan football fans. For the 2025-26 season, the « Panther » fans of OFI Crete have brought a new level of energy to the stadium, often filling the lower tiers with black and white banners. The wide athletics track can sometimes create a distance between fans and the pitch, but the stadium’s acoustic design helps trap the sound, especially under the newly renovated roof sections, creating a vibrant and intimidating environment during high-profile Greek Super League matches.
Located in the Lido district, approximately 3 kilometers west of Heraklion’s city center, Pankritio is highly accessible. It is served by several local bus lines that run from the Port and the Venetian Walls directly to the stadium. For visitors driving, the complex features approximately 700 parking spaces, a rarity for Greek stadiums. Its proximity to the sea and the coastal road (Leoforos Panagioti Kanellopoulou) makes it a popular spot for fans to gather at seaside cafes before making the short walk to the gates.
The name « Pankritio » literally translates to « Pancretan » or « of all Crete. » It was chosen to represent the stadium’s status as a sporting hub for the entire island, not just the city of Heraklion. It symbolizes a sense of unity among the different prefectures of Crete, reflecting the stadium’s ability to host major international events that bring pride to the entire Cretan population.
From central Heraklion, the easiest way to reach the stadium is by taking the « Lido » bus (Line 6 or 12) from the Chanioporta stop; the trip takes about 10 minutes. If you are arriving from the Heraklion International Airport, a taxi ride takes approximately 15–20 minutes via the coastal road. For those staying in the city center, a walk along the seaside promenade is a scenic but longer 35-minute option. In 2026, many OFI fans also use dedicated shuttle services departing from the Theodoros Vardinogiannis (Genti Koule) area on matchdays.
The West Stand (Occidente) is the preferred choice for those seeking the best comfort and the most shade during afternoon matches. For a premium view, the newly added VIP sections in the center of the first tier offer top-tier sightlines. However, for the most authentic Cretan atmosphere, the sections behind the goals (North and South) are where the local supporter clubs congregate. If you are visiting during a clear day, the top rows of the East Stand offer a stunning backdrop of the sea behind the stadium structure.
The Lido district surrounding the stadium is home to several traditional Greek « Ouzeries » and modern cafes overlooking the beach. « Lido Cafe » is a popular pre-match gathering spot for fans. Just a short walk toward the city center, the coastal road is lined with seafood tavernas where you can enjoy local Cretan specialties like « Dakos » or « Kalitsounia. » Inside the stadium, the 2025 renovations included modernized snack bars that serve traditional Greek pita and cold beverages.
Pankritio Stadium is now a fully digital-entry venue as of 2026; fans must use the Gov.gr Wallet app to store and display their tickets at the turnstiles. Following the 2025 renovation, the stadium features enhanced security cameras and a new family-friendly zone in the West Stand. Due to its coastal location, the stadium can be quite windy and noticeably cooler than the city center in the evenings, so bringing a light windbreaker is recommended even for summer matches.
