History of the stadium

The story of Stadion Rođeni is one of survival and rebirth. Historically, FK Velež played at the Bijeli Brijeg Stadium, but following the Bosnian War in the early 1990s, the club was forced to relocate. In 1995, they moved to a former textile factory site in Vrapčići, which was gradually transformed from a basic pitch into a professional stadium. Over three decades, the club and its fans built the stands piece by piece. Today, the stadium is a fully functional modern arena, representing Velež’s independence and its status as a multi-ethnic symbol of Mostar.

Architecture and design

Stadion Rođeni features a modern, compact design that emphasizes fan proximity to the pitch. The stadium consists of three main stands: the North, West, and East stands. The North Stand is the largest and serves as the hub for the club’s most passionate supporters. Significant recent investments have seen the installation of a high-quality hybrid grass pitch, modern floodlighting, and the construction of a new East Stand. The architecture is characterized by a « work-in-progress » spirit, with ongoing projects aimed at fully enclosing the stadium to reach a 10,000-seat capacity for European competitions.

Atmosphere and matchday experience

The atmosphere at Stadion Rođeni is legendary in the Balkans. The club’s supporters, the « Red Army, » are known for their spectacular pyrotechnic displays, creative choreography, and constant chanting. Because the stands are close to the touchline, the acoustic pressure is immense, making it a « hot » ground for visiting teams. A matchday here is more than just a game; it is a celebration of the club’s nickname, « Rođeni » (Our Own/Born), and a demonstration of the deep bond between the city’s residents and their historical club.

Location and accessibility

The stadium is located in the Vrapčići district, about 5 kilometers north of Mostar’s historic city center and the Old Bridge (Stari Most). While it is not in the heart of the city, it is easily accessible via the M-17 road. Most fans reach the stadium by local bus or taxi, which is relatively inexpensive. Its location in a more industrial and residential suburb provides a raw, authentic backdrop compared to the tourist-heavy areas of central Mostar.

Origin of the stadium name

Originally known as Stadion Vrapčići after its neighborhood, the venue was officially renamed « Stadion Rođeni » in 2017 following a fan poll. « Rođeni » (meaning « The Born Ones » or « Our Own ») is the long-standing nickname of FK Velež. The name reflects the deep, almost familial affection the fans have for the club. It serves as a defiant reminder of the club’s identity, especially after they were displaced from their original home ground.

How to get to Stadion Rođeni

The most convenient way to reach the stadium from central Mostar is by taxi, which takes about 10 minutes and costs roughly 5–8 KM (€2.50–€4). Local buses also run frequently toward the northern suburbs; look for lines heading toward Vrapčići. If you are driving from Sarajevo, the stadium is located just off the main M-17 highway as you enter the northern approach to Mostar. There is a parking area near the stadium, but it can get crowded during high-profile matches.

Best seats, view and atmosphere

For the best panoramic view and comfort, the West Stand is the preferred choice as it houses the main VIP and media sections. If you want to experience the heart of the atmosphere and the « Red Army » culture, the North Stand (Sjever) is where the most vocal fans gather. The newly built East Stand also provides excellent sightlines. Due to the stadium’s compact nature, even the lower rows offer a fantastic, intimate view of the action.

Good to know

The « Mostar Derby » against Zrinjski Mostar is one of the most high-risk and emotionally charged fixtures in European football. During these matches, security is exceptionally tight, and away fans are often restricted or subject to strict escort protocols. For regular matches, the stadium is generally safe and family-friendly. It is recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes before kickoff. Avoid wearing rival colors in the Vrapčići neighborhood on matchdays to ensure a smooth and respectful experience.
