Kiel Germany
The Wunderino Arena, located in the heart of Kiel, Germany, is one of the most prestigious indoor arenas in Northern Europe and the legendary fortress of the handball giants THW Kiel. Formerly known as the Ostseehalle, this iconic 13,500-capacity venue is a masterpiece of atmospheric architecture, where the « White Wall » of fans creates a world-renowned acoustic pressure. Beyond handball, the arena is a premier destination for major concerts, international sporting events, and cultural galas. For any sports enthusiast visiting Schleswig-Holstein, the Wunderino Arena offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness elite-level competition in a venue steeped in championship history.
13.500
Opened in 1951 on the site of a former aircraft hangar, the venue was originally named the Ostseehalle. It quickly became the spiritual home of THW Kiel, one of the most successful handball clubs in world history. Over the decades, it has undergone several major renovations to increase capacity and modernize facilities, most notably in 2001. In 2020, the arena entered a naming rights partnership with the online gaming platform Wunderino. Despite the name changes, the arena remains an emotional landmark for the city, having hosted countless German championships and EHF Champions League triumphs.
The architecture of the Wunderino Arena is defined by its distinctive tent-like roof structure and its compact, vertical seating arrangement. This design ensures that every seat—even in the highest rows—is relatively close to the action. The interior is highly modular, allowing the arena to transform from a professional handball court to a concert hall or a specialized equestrian arena within hours. Its acoustic design is particularly famous; the steep stands help trap and amplify sound, creating the « cauldron » effect that makes it one of the most intimidating venues for visiting teams in Europe.
The matchday experience at the Wunderino Arena is centered around the « Zebra » culture of THW Kiel. The atmosphere is professional yet electric, characterized by the « White Wall » of fans dressed in the club’s colors. The pre-match ritual, including the dramatic light show and the entrance of the players, is among the best in indoor sports. Unlike the sprawling arenas of the NBA, the Wunderino Arena offers a dense, high-pressure environment where fans are almost part of the game, making every match an intense emotional journey.
The arena is perfectly situated in the center of Kiel, right on the Europaplatz. Its urban location makes it one of the most accessible major arenas in Germany. It is just a 5-to-10-minute walk from the Kiel Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) and the city’s main shopping districts. Because it is located in a dense city area, public transport and walking are the preferred methods of arrival. Its proximity to the Kiel Fjord and the cruise ship terminals adds a unique maritime backdrop to the matchday experience.
Historically known as the Ostseehalle (Baltic Sea Hall), the venue took on the name Wunderino Arena in July 2020. The naming rights were acquired by the online casino brand Wunderino as part of a long-term partnership with the arena’s management and THW Kiel. While the commercial name is used for all official events and marketing, many local residents and traditionalists still refer to the building by its original name, reflecting its deep-rooted history in the Baltic region.
The best way to reach the arena is via the Kiel Hauptbahnhof (central station). Since the arena is located only 600 meters from the station, walking is the fastest and most reliable method. For those coming from further away within Kiel, numerous bus lines stop at « Europaplatz » or « Ziegelteich, » both of which are directly adjacent to the arena. Driving is not recommended as the city center is prone to congestion on event days and parking at the arena’s underground lot fills up very quickly.
For the best view of the tactical movements in handball, the central blocks in the lower and middle tiers of the lateral stands (Side Stands) are ideal. If you want to be immersed in the most vocal part of the crowd, the stands behind the goals are where the dedicated supporter groups lead the chants. Due to the arena’s steep architecture, even the « Rang » (upper tier) seats offer a surprisingly clear and panoramic view of the court, though they are quite high up.
The arena’s central location means there are dozens of options within a 5-minute walk. The « Holstenstraße » and « Sophienhof » shopping areas offer everything from quick snacks to international dining. For a traditional pre-match beer, many fans gather at the pubs around the « Kleiner Kiel » or the nearby « Alter Markt. » Inside the arena, you can find typical German stadium fare, including bratwurst, pretzels, and local Flensburger beer.
The « Nordderby » against SG Flensburg-Handewitt is one of the most intense rivalries in world handball. Tickets for this match are almost impossible to get without a club membership or season ticket. The arena is exceptionally safe and well-organized, with a strong family-friendly atmosphere. Security checks are standard, and it is recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes before the « Anwurf » (kickoff) to enjoy the pre-match show. The venue is fully accessible for spectators with disabilities, with dedicated platforms for wheelchair users.
