The Herman Vanderpoorten Stadion, affectionately known by fans as « Het Lisp, » is a historic football ground located in the Lisp district of Lier, Belgium. As of late 2024, the stadium is commercially known as the AsterX Group-f Arena. It serves as the legendary home of Lierse (K. Lierse S.K.), a club with a rich heritage in Belgian football. With a capacity of approximately 14,000, the stadium is famous for its steep stands and the passionate, authentic atmosphere created by the « Pallieters » (the club’s nickname). Whether you are visiting for a high-stakes Challenger Pro League match or exploring Belgian football history, « Het Lisp » offers one of the most traditional and atmospheric experiences in Flanders.

Built in 1925, the stadium has been the spiritual home of football in Lier for a century. It was originally named the « Lisperstadion » after the neighborhood where it resides. In later years, it was renamed in honor of Herman Vanderpoorten, a prominent Belgian politician and former Mayor of Lier. The ground saw its golden era during Lierse SK’s championship-winning seasons and iconic European nights. Following the club’s financial struggles in 2018, the stadium was maintained by Lierse Kempenzonen (who eventually reclaimed the historic K. Lierse S.K. name in 2024), ensuring that top-flight professional football remained at the Lisp.
The Herman Vanderpoorten Stadion is a classic four-stand stadium that has undergone several renovations, most notably in 1965 and 2000. It features a unique mix of old-school concrete terraces and modern two-tiered stands. Tribune 1 is the oldest part of the ground, while Tribune 2 is a modern two-tiered stand housing business seats and skyboxes. One of the most famous sections is « Den Berg » (The Mountain), originally a natural earth slope turned into a standing terrace. This variety in stand types gives the stadium a unique architectural character that avoids the « cookie-cutter » feel of many modern arenas.
The atmosphere at « Het Lisp » is widely regarded as one of the most authentic in Belgium. The supporters of Lierse are known for their loyalty and local pride. Matchdays are characterized by the « Pallieter » spirit—a mix of joviality and fierce support. The standing terraces behind the goals, particularly Tribune 3, are the heart of the vocal support, where drums and chants create a lively backdrop. The matchday experience remains grounded in tradition, with a focus on community, beer, and the high-energy environment of the Belgian lower divisions.
The stadium is located on the Lispersesteenweg in the northern part of Lier. Its urban location means it is nestled among residential houses, contributing to its local neighborhood feel. It is about 2 kilometers from the Lier train station, making it a manageable 20–25 minute walk through the charming streets of the city. For those using public transport, several bus lines connect the city center directly to the « Lier-Stadion » stop. For cyclists, the stadium is easily accessible via the Nete river paths, reflecting the popular Flemish cycling culture.
While fans will always call it « Het Lisp, » the official name honors Herman Vanderpoorten (1922–1984), a liberal politician who served as Belgium’s Minister of Justice and as the Mayor of Lier. His family has a long political legacy in the region. In October 2024, the stadium took on the commercial name **AsterX Group-f Arena** as part of a significant sponsorship deal with local businesses, though the historical name remains legally and emotionally tied to the venue and the city.
The best way to reach the stadium is by public transport or bicycle. From Lier railway station, you can take a bus or walk for roughly 20 minutes along the Antwerpsesteenweg and Lispersesteenweg. If you are driving from Antwerp or Mechelen, follow the N10 or R16 road toward Lier; however, parking in the immediate residential vicinity is very restricted on matchdays. It is recommended to use the public parking areas near the city center or the nearby shopping district and complete the journey on foot.
For the best panoramic view and modern amenities, the upper tier of Tribune 2 is the top choice, as it offers a clean line of sight across the entire pitch. If you want to experience the most intense and authentic atmosphere, the standing sections of Tribune 3 (opposite the main stand) are where the hardcore fans congregate. For families, the lateral seating in Tribune 1 provides a more relaxed environment while still being close enough to the pitch to feel the energy of the crowd.
The Lispersteenweg is lined with local cafes and snack bars that come alive on matchdays. « Restaurant 1906, » located right at the stadium (Lispersesteenweg 237), is a popular Mediterranean spot that caters to both fans and families with Halal options. For a traditional pre-match beer, several local pubs in the Lisp district serve as gathering points for the « Lierse » faithful. If you have more time, the Grote Markt in the center of Lier (a 15-minute walk away) offers a wide variety of Flemish brasseries and cafes.
Matches against regional rivals, such as Beerschot or Mechelen (if in the same division), are high-intensity fixtures that usually require strict security protocols and fan separation. For regular league games, the stadium is very safe and welcoming to families. It is recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes before kickoff to navigate the turnstiles. The stadium is ADA-compliant, with dedicated areas for wheelchair users. Note that as of late 2024, many concessions in the stadium have transitioned to cashless systems, so having a debit or credit card ready is advisable.
