Athens Greece

The Agia Sophia Stadium, officially known as the OPAP Arena for sponsorship reasons, is the home of AEK FC. Located in the historic district of Nea Filadelfeia, Athens, this 32,500-seat stadium is built on the same site as the club’s legendary former home, the Nikos Goumas Stadium. Inaugurated in 2022, it is a Category 4 UEFA stadium and stands as one of the most technologically advanced and culturally significant sporting venues in Greece. It serves not just as a football pitch, but as a « Center of Sports, Remembrance, and Culture, » honoring the club’s roots and the history of its founders.

Stadium History

History of the stadium

The stadium’s opening marked the end of a 19-year « exile » for AEK FC, which followed the demolition of the Nikos Goumas Stadium in 2003. After years of planning and construction that began in 2017, the Agia Sophia Stadium held its grand opening on September 30, 2022. The project was deeply emotional for the club’s supporters, as it brought the team back to its ancestral neighborhood. Since its opening, it has hosted high-stakes Super League derbies, European competitions, and the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League final, quickly becoming a symbol of the club’s modern resurgence.

Architecture and design

The architecture of the OPAP Arena is a deliberate tribute to Byzantine history and the city of Constantinople. The exterior features four massive pillars at each corner, reminiscent of ancient watchtowers, and a facade that incorporates arches and traditional stonework. Inside, the seating bowl is divided into two tiers, designed to be as steep as possible to keep fans close to the action. The stadium also houses the Museum of AEK and the Museum of Refugee Hellenism, integrating the club’s sporting achievements with the broader cultural history of the Greek people who migrated from Asia Minor.

Atmosphere and matchday experience

Known as one of the most intimidating « fortresses » in Europe, the stadium’s design traps noise exceptionally well, creating a deafening environment during home matches. The most vocal supporters occupy the « Original 21 » stands behind the goal, where pre-match rituals involve massive choreographies and the flight of « Odysseus, » the club’s golden eagle mascot. The matchday experience is a blend of modern comfort—with luxury suites and HD scoreboards—and raw, traditional passion that begins in the cafes and streets of Nea Filadelfeia hours before kickoff.

Location and accessibility

The stadium is situated in Nea Filadelfeia, a suburb in the northwestern part of Athens. It is highly accessible via the Athens Metro Line 1 (Green Line), with the Perissos and Pefkakia stations being the primary stops for fans. Both stations are roughly a 10-to-15-minute walk from the stadium gates. Additionally, several trolleybus and bus lines (such as Line 3 and Line 6) connect the area to the Athens city center. For those driving, the stadium is near the Kifisou Avenue (National Road), though local street parking is extremely limited on matchdays.

Origin of the stadium name

The name « Agia Sophia » (Hagia Sophia) pays homage to the historic Orthodox cathedral in Constantinople, reflecting the roots of AEK’s founders who were refugees from that city. While its commercial name is the OPAP Arena, fans and the club often refer to it as « Agia Sophia » to emphasize its spiritual and historical identity. Within UEFA competitions, the venue is officially registered as the AEK Arena, as commercial naming rights are generally not permitted for international tournament titles.
