About this place

To be able to compete economically with other German teams, the 1. FSV Mainz 05 wanted to build a new stadium. The club’s preferred solution was a site right next to the Stadion am Bruchweg, which had been used until then. However, due to the extensive obligations to protect the residents during the construction, the club could not finance such a choice. These constraints also applied to the choice of conversion of the Stadion am Bruchweg. After other possibilities were discussed, including a shared stadium with SV Wehen Wiesbaden, a solution was finally found a little outside the city, in the district of Mainz-Bretzenheim. The new stadium was to have 35,000 seats.
