Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
- Commerce City, USA
- 21.086 places
- Opened in 2007
At over 1600m (5200 ft) above sea level, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (often shortened to DSG Park) isn’t just a soccer stadium — it’s a high-altitude battleground where the thin Rocky Mountain air adds another layer of challenge for visiting teams. Located in Commerce City, Colorado, just northeast of downtown Denver, the venue has been the proud home of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids since its opening in 2007.
About this place
The Third Home — and the First Purpose-Built One
Before DSG Park, the Rapids played in two enormous American football venues — Mile High Stadium from 1996 to 2001, and Invesco Field at Mile High until 2006. But in 2004, a bold vision emerged: to build a soccer-specific stadium surrounded by youth fields, retail developments, and a civic center, all part of a $130 million plan. With Commerce City voters backing $65 million in infrastructure improvements, construction broke ground in late 2005 near the former Stapleton International Airport, adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
A year later, Dick’s Sporting Goods secured the naming rights with a 20-year agreement, and in April 2007, the Rapids christened the stadium with a 2–1 win over D.C. United, as Herculez Gomez etched his name into history by scoring the first official goal on the pitch.
High Elevation, Cold Nights, and Big Moments
With a seating capacity of 18,061 for soccer and up to 27,000 for concerts, DSG Park has hosted more than just regular season matches. The stadium’s altitude and frequent snow-covered games have added to its reputation as one of the league’s toughest away days. In its debut year, the venue hosted the 2007 MLS All-Star Game, where the MLS squad defeated Celtic FC of Scotland.
The Rapids’ first home playoff match at DSG came on October 28, 2010, with a narrow 1–0 victory over the Columbus Crew. Just weeks later, a packed crowd witnessed the club defeating the San Jose Earthquakes, setting the stage for their first-ever MLS Cup.
More Than a Stadium — A Mile High Landmark
Owned by Commerce City and operated by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (owners of the Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Mammoth), DSG Park is more than a sports venue — it’s part of the city’s identity. With its network of soccer fields surrounding the main stadium, it also serves as a hub for youth development and community engagement.
In a league known for flashy downtown arenas, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park stands apart — rugged, open to the elements, and proudly Coloradan. It’s a place where altitude and attitude collide, and where the Colorado Rapids have forged some of their most iconic moments.
