The Stadion Poljud was officially opened on 26 September 1979 to host the Mediterranean Games, marking a milestone in Split’s sporting infrastructure. Its construction was part of a larger urban development plan to modernize the city and create a world-class venue on the Adriatic coast. Since its inauguration, Poljud has served as the home ground of HNK Hajduk Split and has been the stage for countless memorable matches, including European club competitions and Croatian national team fixtures. Over the years, it has also hosted athletics championships, concerts, and cultural events, further cementing its status as a multi-purpose venue. In the 1990s, Poljud played a significant role in Croatian football’s international re-emergence following independence, with several key national team games taking place here.
Architecture
Designed by Croatian architect Boris Magaš, the stadium is famous for its distinctive shell-like roof structure, which blends seamlessly with the surrounding coastal landscape. The semi-open design provides natural ventilation while the curved roof amplifies crowd noise, creating a unique atmosphere. The open side facing the sea offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic, making it one of the most picturesque stadiums in Europe. With a seating capacity exceeding 33,000, it meets UEFA standards and offers modern facilities for players, officials, and spectators alike.

Located in the Poljud district of Split, the stadium sits just north of the city center and a short walk from the waterfront. Its proximity to major roads and public transport hubs makes it easily accessible. Visitors can use local buses, taxis, or even walk from central Split, enjoying scenic views along the way.
Who is HNK Hajduk Split?
HNK Hajduk Split is one of Croatia’s most historic and successful football clubs, founded in 1911 by a group of students from Split. Known for its fierce rivalry with Dinamo Zagreb and its devoted fan base, the “Torcida,” Hajduk has won multiple national championships and cups, and regularly competes in European competitions.
