About this place

History

San Siro, officially Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, was built from 1925 and opened on September 19, 1926. Originally owned by AC Milan, it became shared with Inter Milan in 1947. Renamed in 1980 after legendary player Giuseppe Meazza, the stadium underwent major expansions in 1935, 1955, and a major rebuild for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, adding the iconic third tier and sweeping roof.

Description

The stadium accommodates approximately 75,817 seated spectators (up to 80,018 at peak capacity). It features four covered stands enclosing a natural GrassMaster pitch (105 × 68 m), with no athletics track. The exterior is marked by spiral access ramps, and the interior includes VIP suites and 30 hospitality boxes.

Architectural Features

Designed by Cugini & Stacchini and upgraded by Ronca, Calzolari, Ragazzi, Hoffer, and Finzi, San Siro is characterised by its dramatic spiral towers and sweeping cantilevered roof. The three-tiered structure provides steep sightlines. Beneath the stands lies the Milan Museum and a dedicated stadium museum.

What is Giuseppe Meazza?

Giuseppe Meazza (1910–1979) was a Milanese football legend for Inter and Italy. The stadium was renamed in his honour in 1980, though both clubs continue to refer to it as San Siro.

Records

San Siro’s highest recorded attendance exceeded 80,000 before safety seating was introduced. It hosted the 1934 World Cup quarter-final, the 1990 World Cup opener, Euro 1980 matches, four European Cup finals, and will host the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. It has also staged concerts by top international artists and rugby internationals.
