Stade Louis II in Monaco is a multi-sport complex opened in 1985 atop reclaimed sea land, named after Prince Louis II. It holds 16,360 seats, features nine iconic arches, and includes athletics facilities, an aquarium, basketball hall, and underground parking. It hosts AS Monaco, Diamond League athletics, UEFA Super Cups, and major boxing events.
Stade Louis II stands in the Fontvieille district of Monaco, replacing the original stadium from 1939. Construction began in May 1981 on reclaimed land and the new venue opened on January 25, 1985. Named after Prince Louis II, it was officially inaugurated by Prince Rainier III. It serves as home to AS Monaco and hosts athletics events like the Diamond League’s Herculis, plus UEFA Super Cups (1998–2012) and boxing title fights.
The stadium seats about 16,360 spectators in an open-air horseshoe bowl, along with an eight‑lane athletics track. Beneath the pitch lies a multi-level 1,700-space car park, club offices, and indoor sports facilities including the Gaston‑Médecin arena and Prince Albert II aquatic centre.
Notable for its nine arches at the away end, Stade Louis II is built atop a raised concrete deck over the car park. It features a hybrid grass field, modern floodlighting, press and commentary suites, plus media tower and hospitality zones integrated into the west stand.
Prince Louis II reigned from 1922 to 1949 and commissioned the first stadium in 1939. Though a new stadium was built decades later, it retained his name in recognition of his contributions to Monegasque sports.
The record attendance was around 20,000 for AS Monaco versus Sampdoria in April 1990. The current seated capacity is approximately 16,360. It famously held numerous UEFA Super Cups, the Herculis Diamond League, and high-profile boxing matches.
