History
The Ibn Batouta Stadium was inaugurated in 2011 to provide Tangier with a world-class sporting venue. Named after the 14th-century Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, it quickly became one of Morocco’s largest and most important football stadiums. It has hosted several international competitions, including matches of the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA Club World Cup, as well as Morocco’s national team fixtures.

The stadium was designed as a modern bowl-shaped arena with a capacity of 65,000 spectators. It features all-seater stands, VIP and press facilities, and floodlighting that meets FIFA standards. The open design provides clear sightlines from every seat, while future expansion plans could potentially increase capacity to 80,000.

Who was Ibn Battuta?
The stadium is named after Ibn Battuta, the legendary Moroccan explorer born in Tangier in 1304. Known as one of the greatest travelers in history, he journeyed across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and parts of Europe, covering nearly 120,000 kilometers during his lifetime. Naming the stadium after him reflects Tangier’s pride in its heritage and global legacy.
