Gies Memorial Stadium is a historic American football stadium located on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois, United States. Primarily used as the home venue for the Illinois Fighting Illini (NCAA), the stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 60,670 and stands as a memorial to university students who died serving in World War I and II. Originally known as Memorial Stadium, it was renamed Gies Memorial Stadium in 2025 in honor of a major philanthropic gift and continuing legacy.
Gies Memorial Stadium opened in 1923 on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It was originally built as a memorial to students and alumni who lost their lives during World War I, a dedication later extended to those who died in World War II. Since its opening, the stadium has been a central landmark of the university and a major venue in American college football.
For most of its history, the venue was known simply as Memorial Stadium. It was later renamed Gies Memorial Stadium following a major philanthropic contribution honoring the legacy of the Gies family. Despite the name change, the stadium retains its original memorial purpose and symbolic importance.
