History of the stadium
Gies Memorial Stadium opened in 1923 on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It was originally built as a memorial to students and alumni who lost their lives during World War I, a dedication later extended to those who died in World War II. Name and memorial significance
For most of its history, the venue was known simply as Memorial Stadium. It was later renamed Gies Memorial Stadium following a major philanthropic contribution honoring the legacy of the Gies family.
