Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City is one of the NFL’s most iconic outdoor venues. Home to the Chiefs since 1972, it seats over 76,000 fans and is famed for its electric atmosphere and record-breaking attendance. Learn about its history, architecture, fan tips, seating layout, and guided tours.
Arrowhead Stadium, officially GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium since March 2021, opened on August 12, 1972, in Kansas City, Missouri. It was built alongside Kauffman Stadium as part of the Truman Sports Complex to replace Municipal Stadium. Designed by Kivett & Myers, the venue cost approximately $43 million and remains the oldest stadium in the AFC. A major $375 million renovation took place between 2007 and 2010.
The stadium covers an expansive footprint and seats 76,416 spectators, making it the fourth-largest NFL stadium and the largest sports venue in Missouri. It features natural grass (since 1994), over 80 luxury suites, and ample parking within the complex. Known for its powerful crowd presence and tailgate culture, it regularly features flyovers and stadium-wide fan experiences.
The design includes concentric seating bowls surrounding a grass field, with large end-zone scoreboards (JumboTrons) added in 1991. While lacking a roof, convenient public transit and parking make it a functional and fan-friendly venue. Its loud, open-air environment is legendary in the NFL.
GEHA (Government Employees Health Association) is a nonprofit health plan provider. They secured naming rights in 2021, renaming the venue GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium under a deal lasting until 2031, reinforcing Arrowhead’s identity in Kansas City’s public and sporting life.
The original capacity once exceeded 79,400 (1995–2009). A reported attendance peak reached over 82,000 during an early Chiefs–Raiders game in 1972. Between Nov 2018 and May 2019, Arrowhead led the world in arena attendance with ~700,000 visitors. In 2023–24, it surpassed its own record with over 2.4 million visitors. It also held a Guinness-recognized stadium noise record of 142.2 dB in 2014.
