The stadium became the home ground of Unión Magdalena starting in 2018. It replaced the club’s previous home arrangements and has hosted domestic league fixtures since the club’s return to playing in Santa Marta.
The stadium project lists Mazzanti as architect and includes a modern football-specific layout designed for mid-size crowds. The facility was developed as a central sports venue within the Bureche sector in the south of Santa Marta.
In October 2017, the stadium was announced under the name “Sierra Nevada,” referencing the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range. The name was chosen to highlight the region’s natural and cultural identity.
