About this place

History

Estadio Sausalito is located in Viña del Mar, Chile. It was inaugurated in 1929 and has hosted major tournaments including the 1962 FIFA World Cup, the 1991 Copa América, and matches during the 2015 Copa América. The stadium has long served as the home ground of the local club Everton de Viña del Mar.

Description

The stadium has a capacity of approximately 23,000 spectators. It features a traditional open bowl structure with stands on all four sides. Major renovations were completed in 2015 to modernize facilities and comply with international standards, including a new roof over part of the main stand, improved seating, lighting, and press areas.

Who is “Sausalito”?

The stadium is named after the nearby Sausalito Lagoon, located just a few hundred meters from the venue. The name “Sausalito” itself means “little willow grove” in Spanish and also references the twinned city of Sausalito, California, with which Viña del Mar shares a symbolic relationship.

Records

Estadio Sausalito hosted several matches during the 1962 FIFA World Cup, including quarter-final games. It has also been the venue for international friendlies and domestic finals, with full-house crowds on many occasions, especially when Everton is competing for national titles.
