Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander is a historic football stadium located in Valparaíso, Chile. Commonly known as Estadio Playa Ancha, it is the home ground of Santiago Wanderers and one of the country’s notable football venues. Originally built in the early 20th century and extensively modernized, the stadium has hosted domestic league matches, continental competitions and international football events.
Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander was originally constructed in the early 1930s in the Playa Ancha district of Valparaíso. It served as a primary football venue for the region and became the home stadium of Santiago Wanderers, one of Chile’s oldest football clubs. Over the decades, the stadium saw multiple renovations and modernization efforts, most recently completed in the early 2010s to update facilities and improve spectator comfort.
The stadium has undergone several name changes during its history. It was formerly known as Estadio Municipal de Valparaíso and later as Estadio Regional Chiledeportes. It was eventually renamed in honor of Elías Figueroa Brander, a legendary Chilean footballer widely regarded as one of the nation’s greatest players.
Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander has a rectangular football layout with seating surrounding the pitch. Renovation work included the construction of modern stands and updated spectator facilities, while preserving elements of the older structure. The stadium also features a natural grass surface and track areas around the playing field in some sections.
The stadium has a seating capacity of over 20,000 spectators. Upgrades in recent years have improved seating arrangements, safety features and amenities to meet contemporary standards for professional football. Support facilities include locker rooms, media areas and spaces for hospitality and VIP guests.
Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander serves as the home venue of Santiago Wanderers, hosting league matches in Chile’s top divisions and national cup competitions. The stadium has also been selected to host international youth and senior fixtures, including matches in continental tournaments.
