  • Aachen, Germany
  • 32.920 places
  • Opened in 2009

Opened in 2009, The Tivoli, often referred to as the new Tivoli, is Aachen's iconic stadium. It hosts the home matches of Alemannia Aachen, currently playing in the 3. Liga, and can accommodate up to 32,920 spectators.

About this place

History

Built to replace the old Tivoli stadium nearby, the new stadium came into being after lengthy discussions about its location. While the municipality envisaged a site close to the airport, popular pressure led to its construction in the Sportpark Soers, the same sports district as the old stadium.
Work began after the project was presented in February 2007. To part-finance the costs, some 4.2 million euros were raised through bonds subscribed mainly by the club’s supporters.

The stadium was officially opened on August 17, 2009 in a match against FC St. Pauli, which ended in a 0-5 defeat – the heaviest home defeat in the club’s history. The very first match, although played behind closed doors, was against Belgian club Lierse SK.

Architecture and capacity

The Tivoli can accommodate up to 32,920 spectators, including 11,681 standing places, 19,345 seats, and 1,934 in various areas. For international competitions, seating only is permitted, bringing capacity to 27,250.
The stadium has been designed to offer a typical German stadium atmosphere, with a large standing stand, particularly popular with the most fervent fans.

Milestones

The first international match to be played at the Tivoli took place on September 4, 2009, when the German U-21 team beat San Marino 6-0 as part of the qualifying campaign for Euro U21 2011.

In 2023, a new episode marked the life of the Tivoli: the club 1. FC Düren, awaiting the renovation of its own stadium, was authorized to play its home matches there for the 2023/24 season in Regionalliga West. This decision enabled the club to obtain its license for the current season and avoid administrative relegation.
