About this place
A Stadium Built by the People
Originally opened on August 7, 1920, the ground has been renovated several times. A major rebuild took place in 2008–2009, when over 2,300 volunteers, many of them fans, contributed their time and labor to refurbish the terraces. In 2012–2013, the main stand was reconstructed to modern standards, improving facilities without sacrificing the club’s spirit.
Ownership and Expansion
Since 2023, Union Berlin has owned the stadium land, after purchasing it from the city. The ongoing renovation project aims to expand the venue to 40,500, with 32,500 standing places and 8,000 seats, making it the largest pure football stadium in Berlin — and one of the last strongholds of traditional standing culture in German football.
