Upon completion of construction in 2013, it was initially named the National Stadium of the Heroes of Gabon’s Disaster for this reason, but the ruling Patriotic Front government came under pressure from the public to change the name.
The stadium’s name refers to the 1993 Zambian national soccer team air disaster, which claimed the lives of most of the team’s members.
