About the Building
On November 13, 2006, it was officially announced that the stadium would be named Citi Field, as Citigroup purchased the 20-year naming rights for $400 million USD. On the same day, the official groundbreaking ceremony took place.
The very first game in the stadium took place on March 29, 2009, with a college baseball game between the St. John’s Red Storm and the Georgetown Hoyas. The Mets played their first game at Citi Field on April 3, 2009, in a charity game against the Boston Red Sox, and the first regular season home game is played on April 13, 2009, against the San Diego Padres. The Mets will host the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Citi Field.
