Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco is a 45,000-seat stadium built in 1958 and expanded for Copa América 2004 and 2013. It hosts three Peruvian Primera División clubs and national team games. Notable for its high-altitude setting and cultural architecture, it offers an unforgettable Andean football experience.
Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, also called Estadio Garcilaso, was inaugurated in 1958 in Cusco, Peru. Named after the mestizo writer Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, it originally held around 22,000 spectators. In 2004, the stadium was extensively renovated for Copa América—including the installation of new seating, removal of the athletics track, and upgraded pitch—raising capacity to approximately 42,056. Further expansions in 2013 included luxury boxes and a modern façade, increasing capacity to about 45,056.
The football-specific venue seats about 45,056 spectators, with a natural grass pitch (105 × 68 m) and no athletics track. Located at 3,362 m above sea level, it offers clear sightlines and vibrant local atmosphere. It hosts three top-flight clubs—Cienciano, Cusco FC, and Deportivo Garcilaso—as well as occasional Peru national team fixtures and Copa América matches.
Set against the Andean backdrop, the stadium combines practical design with regional character. It includes covered stands along the sidelines, exposed end terraces, modern floodlighting, and basic VIP boxes added in 2013. Walls are painted in rainbow colors symbolizing Cusco’s cultural heritage.
Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (1539–1616) was a mestizo Peruvian writer and historian, regarded as the first chronicler of Inca culture. The stadium bears his name as an homage to his literary legacy and connection to Cusco.
The initial capacity was 22,000. After upgrades, it reached 42,056 in 2004, and approximately 45,056 after 2013 renovations. Matches against high-profile opponents often fill the stadium. Its high altitude—3,362 m—adds a unique challenge, noted in travel reviews and fan comments.
The stands include:
All seating encircles the field closely, with the pitch exposed to the open air. There is no running track.
No standard public tours are available. However, guided “football experience” tours can be booked through local providers, offering matchday visits, stadium entry, and cultural insights. No regular access on non-matchdays.
