History

Stadio Olimpico was built between 1928–1953 in Rome’s Foro Italico, initially opening as Stadio dei Cipressi in 1932. It was fully inaugurated on May 17, 1953, with a match between Italy and Hungary. It was renamed Stadio Olimpico in 1955 and hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics—including opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events. Major renovations occurred for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and again in 2007–08 for UEFA and athletics standards.

The stadium currently seats approximately 70,634 spectators, making it the largest sports venue in Rome and second largest in Italy. It features a natural grass pitch (105 × 68 m), athletics track, full bowl seating, and two large LED scoreboards above the North and South stands.

Architectural Features

Designed by Enrico Del Debbio and later renovated by Annibale Vitellozzi and Mario Clerici, Stadio Olimpico features sweeping covered stands, iconic floodlight towers, and classic Italian architecture. It includes athletics facilities, modern media and broadcast zones, hospitality suites, and is part of the historic Foro Italico sports complex.

Foro Italico is a sports complex north of Rome built during the Fascist era, encompassing Stadio Olimpico, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and statues along grand avenues. It remains Rome’s premier sports and cultural venue.

Originally known as « Centomila » for its 100,000-seat capacity, it now holds 70,634. It hosted major finals: Euro 1968, Euro 1980, World Cup 1990 final, Euro 2020 group matches and quarter-finals, Champions League finals (1996, 2009), Coppa Italia finals, Six Nations rugby since 2012, Golden Gala athletics, and large concerts including U2, Madonna, and Ed Sheeran.

Where to Sit

The stadium features a four-stand bowl layout:

  • West Stand (Main): VIP suites, media centre, press boxes
  • East Stand: opposite side spectator seating
  • North & South Stands: behind goals; South features athletics track view

All stands are fully covered; the athletics track surrounds the pitch. Two electronic scoreboards are placed above the North and South stands.

Can I visit outside matchdays?

Guided stadium tours are available daily (excluding match/event days), typically from 10:00–18:00. They include pitchside access, dressing rooms, athletics track, press and VIP zones, and interactive exhibits.
