Reggio Emilia - Italy
Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia is a 21,525-seat privately owned stadium opened in 1995. Hosting Sassuolo and Reggiana, it features VIP seating, a unique pitch moat, an integrated shopping mall, and hosts national and European events. Named for the Italian flag’s birthplace, it reflects deep local ties and modern club ownership.
Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore opened on April 15, 1995, replacing Reggio Emilia’s former Stadio Mirabello. Originally called Stadio Giglio, it was renamed Stadio Città del Tricolore in March 2012, then acquired by Mapei S.p.A. in July 2013—the first example of modern privately funded club ownership in Italy. It was built after Reggiana’s promotion to Serie A, fully financed via season ticket sales and private investment.
The all-seater stadium holds approximately 21,525 seats (capacity limited to ~20,084 for safety), with 474 VIP seats, 108 press seats, and around 104 disabled-access seats. The pitch measures 105 × 68 m of natural grass, with full coverage on the main stands and no athletics track.
Designed for function and intimacy, it features covered West and East stands, and uncovered end stands. A unique water moat separates pitch from stands to deter pitch invasions. Below the East stand is the “I Petali” mall containing shops, a cinema, restaurants, and a fitness centre.
The name commemorates Reggio Emilia’s role in launching the Italian Tricolor flag in 1797. “Mapei Stadium” reflects its ownership by Mapei S.p.A., who acquired naming rights in 2013 under a long-term deal.
The inaugural match (Reggiana vs Juventus, April 1995) saw a record 22,664 spectators. U-21 internationals, Women’s Champions League finals (2016), Italian Super Cups (2020, 2021), and Europa League fixtures have since taken place. The stadium also hosts Italy national team matches.
