The Mercedes-Benz Arena (formerly O2 World) is a multi-sports hall located in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain (Bezirk of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg). It is mainly used for ice hockey, basketball, concerts and other events.
The foundation stone was laid on September 13, 2006. The hall was built on the site of the former Ostgüterbahnhof freight station on Mühlenstraße and is part of an urban development project on the banks of the Spree. In the surrounding area, cinemas, a casino, a hotel, restaurants and other facilities will be built. The opening ceremony was held on September 10, 2008.
At the opening of this hall, a demonstration gathered more than 1,000 people. They were protesting against the privatization of the Spree River docks.
